I’m a Denver-based writer and editor for various outdoor, travel, and business publications. I’m a proud graduate of the CU-Boulder’s School of Journalism (bachelor of science cum laude) and one of the few people I know who actually uses my degree. After a stint working in book publishing in New York, I realized I preferred the mountains to the big city (and I missed my people), so I moved back to Colorado, where I had spent my childhood splashing in streams and annoying my fly-fisherman dad, learning the clearance limit of an old Willys Jeep, and shredding my kid-sized mittens on the rope tow at Loveland Ski Area.
After relocating home, I got married (to a handsome outdoorsman who’s also an amazing landscape photographer and entrepreneur) and restarted my career doing outdoor industry PR (for Tecnica, Völkl, and Lowe Alpine, among others) before becoming an editor at the startup Rocky Mountain magazine and then Skiing magazine. I was in charge of Skiing’s skiwear and soft-goods coverage as well as editing features and columns. Eventually I became managing editor and added “managing a staff of 11” to my job description. I quit working full-time at Skiing when my two kids were little and—in addition to becoming a chauffeur, short-order cook, and part-time paramedic—I took on the role of editor-in-chief of Warren Miller’s SnoWorld, where I covered behind-the-scenes stories and shenanigans from the making of the iconic annual film.
As a freelance writer and editor, I’ve worked for many publications, including the SIA Snow Show Daily, Vail-Beaver Creek, Ski, Elevation Outdoors, The Drake, 32 Degrees, National Geographic Adventure, Sierra, Exit 205, Modern Luxury’s Peak, Delicious Living, Live Naturally, Call of the Wild, and Jackson Hole magazine. Until recently, I served as managing editor of Outdoor Retailer magazine, which, in addition to its quarterly print issues, pivoted from a monthly and trade show daily to a weekly in order to report on industry news and provide inspiration and guidance during and after the pandemic. I also have ghost-written and edited several books and have written a lot of press releases, website content, and marketing copy. Oh, and I got bored when my kids were little and started a blog, RealLifeDelicious, where I write about my love of family dinners, kale salads, and wild duck enchiladas. I also took up photography as a creative outlet and have loved learning how to make images that come even slightly close to being as spectacular as the natural world.
My work has allowed me to travel to Switzerland, Austria, France, Utah, Idaho, Canada, and Japan—for research—and attend many, many trade shows, press trips, and media events. I love all of that. But honestly, I’m pretty darn happy wherever there’s a view, plenty of snacks, decent wifi, my black labs, and a trail out the back door.
